UKSUUM CAUYAI (THE DRUMS OF WINTER)

Documentary Feature Film (excerpt)

Directed by Sarah Elder and Leonard Kamerling

We recently served as preservation consultants for the restoration of UKSUUM CAUYAI (The Drums of Winter), a ground-breaking 1988 film on Yup'ik dance listed on the Library of Congress' prestigious National Film Registry. Co-Director and Cinematographer Len Kamerling says "Bob Curtis Johnson of SummitDay Media was the chief consultant and coordinator of the preservation and restoration of my film, Uksuum Cauyai: The Drums of Winter. Simply put, his knowledge, experience and passion to preserve our visual heritage made this project a huge success. Bob shepherded the film through a complex film and digital restoration process, resulting in a final product that exceeded my most hopeful expectations. Through our very productive collaboration we were able to fulfill the mandate of the National Film Registry- to preserve the film for future generations." Leonard Kamerling, Curator of Film at the University of Alaska Museum of the North.
